South Africa it is!

I thought I should carve a little time out of my evening to give a recap of the chaos that was yesterday before all my memories of it escape into the recesses of my mind.

Yesterday I had two early meetings, mid-way through the second meeting I got a call from the Peace Corps (I may or may not have saved the number into my phone). I stepped out of the meeting quickly-- it was a placement officer (PO) wanting to do my "final placement" interview. I told her I would call her back.

Fast-forward an unproductive hour because I couldn't focus my mind on anything but PC-- I almost literally ran to my car and called the PO back. Not a smart idea. I was flustered, my mind was all over the place. I assumed it was going to be simple questions-- boy was I wrong. First question: "Why do you want to join the PC?" I stumbled my way through an awkward 10 minute call. At the end the woman told me I would be departing at the end of January working on HIV/AIDS with kids and that I would be receiving my invitation by email by the end of the week. I knew from my excessive internet searching that the only PC departure to Africa in January was to South Africa, I was right.

I went back to the office flustered and part freaking out. For those of you who know me, I thought the last country I wanted to be in was South Africa. All of a sudden knowing the invite was in the mail made this whole process real, and made me slightly panic. I relied on my dear friends to talk me through the questioning and start to realize the possibilities and what a great opportunity I have been given.

Assuming I wouldn't be receiving my invite for another day I offered to tag along on a 2 hour trip north for a campaign event. On the ride up we stopped at a rest stop to grab coffee and pee. After washing my hands in the classy rest stop bathroom I looked at my phone to see that I had received an email from the PC with the word "invite" in the subject line. I just received my invitation in a rest stop bathroom-- just as glamorous as I had imagined. I sat at a table near the Starbucks waiting for my phone to load. South Africa it is!! The invitation came with 20 + pages of attachments, a welcome book, a super in depth description of my invitation, and security and rules. I scanned through as much as I could in the car but was occupied by work.

Hannah and I had this silly tradition that after we got news of my PC or her Fullbright we would drink a bottle of Strawberry Andre. I had to continue the tradition even though she is already long gone to her Fullbright in Bulgaria. By the time I was heading home from work it was almost 10:30, I stopped at a Hannaford, the only store open and got as close to a bottle of Strawberry Andre as I could. My mind was, and still is in overload. As I read and learn more I promise more updates. In the meantime, I have accepted my invitation and from what I have processed so far, I am over the moon with excitement!!

It's official: South Africa

Well that was quick, I have received my official invitation!! I will be working in South Africa in the Community HIV/AIDS Outreach program as an HIV Outreach Worker departing January 23, 2013!

Invitation by the end of the week

Bahhhh. Had my placement interview this morning. Got the call as I was in a campaign meeting. Called the woman back as soon as I got out for a 10 minute interview. It was awkward, I got off the phone feeling very ambivalent. The conversation did not flow and I felt flustered and we just didn't click.

However, she did tell me I will be working with children who have been affected by HIV/AIDS from what I could understand from the brief description I got. She told me I will be leaving at the end of January and that I should be receiving my invitation via email by the end of the week. I've done some research on departure dates and I'm 99% sure I'll be going to South Africa. Holy macaroni.

Work is hectic, my mind is all over the place. Reactions to follow.

PC Placement Office, you make my heart sing

No monumental news, but baby steps in the right direction. I had a dream last night that I had received an invitation to serve in Senegal-- but then I woke up. Boo. It must have been a premonition that the Peace Corps would be contacting me today!

My pal, Doug, from the Placement and Assessment Office, sent me an email requesting more information before my placement interview (apparently I'm having one of those). He asked me to send him an updated resume & transcript, and to fill out and return a form of questions he sent to me.

Any new romantic relationship? No. Newly divorced? No. What are your expectations for service? What do you foresee your five biggest challenges being? (My first draft said spiders, list has since been revised). Are your friends & family supporting your decision. That's a big YES (Hannah has offered to everything short of injuring someone to find out my placement). And then the scary questions: Are you prepared to serve in a site with limited or no “amenities” such as electricity, running water or indoor toilet? Are you prepared to serve in a site that is isolated and/or a significant distance from other PCVs? Are you prepared to serve in a site where access to means of communication such as internet or cell phone service is limited or non-existent? I hope.

I'm waiting on my transcript from Wheaton, but I submitted everything else within two hours, obviously.

Medically cleared.

After some nice, but excessive emailing I finally have received my medical clearance! Exhale. My PC nurse emailed me to let me know, a letter should come in the mail soon to detail my next steps. From the interwebs it appears that I should be hearing from the Placement Officer shortly-- I could be receiving my invitation (country and date) in the next week, or it could take six weeks. JHSDUJFHSESKDF. I'm very pleased.

In other news, campaign life has been crazy. I've been totally slacking on keeping up with friends and family, sorry everyone!! My life lately has been made up of campaign, food, & sleep sometimes-- but no complaints. In the past couple of weeks we've been to Bangor/Orono, Bridgton, Farmington/Weld, Augusta, Ellsworth, Brunswick-- we'll be heading up to Madawaska in the coming weeks. Two hour car rides no longer phase me. We're incredibly busy, but what an experience. Will be looking forward to some nice R&R come mid-November.

I can taste medical clearance

So close to medical clearance I can almost taste it. Dental is officially cleared, got the okay from the nurse on my knee and basic medical but because of my anxiety a mental health nurse has to give the final approval. The nurse I spoke with today seemed to think I would be cleared tomorrow unless the mental health nurse has any outstanding questions. Cross your fingers for me please. Full medical clearance would put me into the placement phase and oh so close to an official invitation including country & date.

Campaign life is super picking up, spent 14 hours traveling across the state Tuesday and again today. Exhausted. I will share any more updates on Peace Corps as I have them!

Waiting for MY adventure.

Hawaii, DC, Virginia, Massachusetts, Bulgaria, France, Amsterdam.

Graduated, still in school, or otherwise I've recently noticed the trend of my friends going on spectacular adventures across the country & globe. I love hearing stories and reading blogs from all of their adventures. While I know the campaign trail is an adventure in it's own right, I can't help feeling extremely jealous of my friends all over the world.

Every chance I get I've been reading Peace Corps books & blogs trying to learn, to understand, and to prepare. I thought maybe reading would help fight off my immediate desire to travel & explore-- it has only made me want to experience every corner of the world more.

To my friends exploring now: Exhale. Relax. Open your eyes & enjoy. Oh, and remember to send lots of updates & pictures this way!

58 days until the Election

Not that anyone is counting. November 6th is Election Day. If it isn't on your calendar yet, it should be!! In Maine you can already request your ballot online- here.

Campaign life is picking up, I thought I was busy before. I can go without sleep for 58 days right? We got some great endorsements (MSEA, Maine Nurses, WAND, National Women's Political Caucus) & have been working hard. I wont bore you though, you can read it all for yourself on the campaign's website and/or Facebook (if you haven't liked our page yet you should-- even if you're out of state).

Labor Day weekend I got a few days to relax. Dad & I went parasailing out of Saco!! They brought us right to the beach in front of our house-- the whole family was there waving like goons. It was weirdly quiet & it feels like you're going at a snail's place. The weekend was also filled with other adventures-- mini golf, Palace Playland, too many family games, swimming in the ocean, shopping & the arcade. Can't beat Maine.

No news from Peace Corps. I'm dying. I've been reading One Hand Does Not Catch a Buffalo-- short stories from RPCV (returned Peace Corps volunteers)-- it is not helping me be any more patient. I was told I should hear by a nurse by mid-September-ish. Ahhhhhh. Hurry up.

PC Update!

Circa 2010, but so fitting for this post.
I've been dying for some sort of update. It has been almost three weeks since the last murmur, which was to simply tell me my packet arrived.

"Your medical kit was received and logged into our system and was just distributed to a nurse for review this week. It will likely be a few weeks before you hear from your nurse about any additional information or medical clearance, due to the high volume of work related to the transition, but your file will be reviewed shortly. In the meantime, if you have copies of the documentation you submitted, it would be helpful if you could review the documentation to check if there is anything that is incomplete. If you can address this now, it will save a further delay if your nurse would need to request this information later."

A few weeks? That's three right? I'm going to say it's three. Three weeks is September 10th. That's only  504 hours. No sweat. My paperwork is only 40+ pages and I've only reviewed it probably 10 times. If you need me in the next 504 hours I will be reading the same pages over and over. Can you tell my nonexistent patience is wearing thin?

Send me good vibes and a quick reading nurse!

August

How could August possibly be almost over? It has been a crazy month to say the least.

Hannah came back from Italy, I got to spend a brief twelve hours running around Boston with her. Now she's somewhere off in Bulgaria saving the world, teaching English, or leading a choir or something.

Saw Mumford and Sons live on the Eastern Prom with Keelin at their Gentleman of the Road Portland Stopover! It was spectacular! Keelin was on TV. The back drop was the water. Maine is the best-- how lucky we are.

The next weekend Natalie came to visit and we adventured to Massachusetts to see Lauren & Zachary get married! It was so great to see Natalie, Lauren, Zach, & Sharie. It had been far too long since I had seen them all. It was a muggy day, but a good time was had by all. A butterfly landed on Lauren's head during the ceremony-- I couldn't make it up if I tried. Lauren looked absolutely stunning, Zach looked dapper as always.

The campaign has been moving quickly. I've been working long hours but everything seems to be going well. This past weekend we travelled to Walpole in Lincoln County and Owls Head in Knox County for lobster bakes. The coast of Maine is gorgeous. We didn't eat a bite of lobster the whole day. From here until November it is going to be getting progressively more busy and chaotic. See ya never!

July.

Where has this month gone? Its been a couple of week and updates are in order.
No word from the PC, probably wont hear anything until at least September.
The campaign trail has been chaotic and exciting. We did a Camp Wellstone training one weekend in Portland. The following weekend we were up in Aroostook County (6 hours north!) for the Potato Blossom Festival hanging out cows, eating raspberries, and marching in a parade. This weekend I had some free time, spent most of it catching up on sleep. Things are only going to get crazier as they progress. Still loving every moment.

Hurry up & wait.

In Peace Corps news, my medical packet has been SUBMITTED!!!!!!!! It was more than 40 pages of paperwork. I went through it at least 5 times, every signature was there, everything filled out. Now, I wait, and check the tracking information on the envelope every hour.

A quick update on the campaign trail: still loving every minute. Summer is filled with lots of festivals & parades, we’ll be doing a lot of traveling and I am very excited to see every corner of Maine! Since the primary everything has been in a bit of a transition phase, but things are finally settling down. Work & PC are consuming most of my thoughts, loving the present & very excited for future possibilities!

A week for the records.

Exhale. Holy macaroni. What a week, what a week. As I mentioned briefly before, I have been working on the Cynthia Dill for U.S. Senate campaign– Tuesday was the primary. (Nervous excitement) We thought it was going to be a close one, but we absolutely rocked it & won with 44% of the votes! Following the excitement I was made campaign manager, and I am now married to my job. The next five months are going to be pure chaos and I couldn’t be any more thrilled!

Pearly Whites

Called and got a dentist appointment for this afternoon! Woo for cancellations! Everything looked good and they should have the paperwork finished by Friday! I need to get my TB test looked at, pick up paperwork, and I’ll be done. How is that possible? So thankful everything fell together!

My arm, the pin cushion

Doctors appointment today– 3 hours, 2 offices, 6 vials of blood, a TB test, a shot, one cup full of pee and I’m almost done. I have to pick up my completed paperwork and get my TB test looked at Thursday and wah-la, medical will be done. Dental appointment Wednesday, fingers crossed I can get it all out by Friday! This is all definitely feeling more manageable!
