Salzburg.

The train ride from Munich was short and we navigated pretty seamlessly to our hostel. Compared to all of the big cities we’ve been staying in, this little town tucked in the hills was a nice break. The big attraction to Salzburg is all the locations where The Sound of Music was filmed, which is exactly what led us there-- Keelin is a super fan of the movie, while I thought being in the hills might be a nice change of scenery.

We stayed in the Yoho International Youth Hostel, we really liked it. We stayed in a six person dorm, that was never full, with a table perfect for planning and big, bright windows. Also, they had a nightly showing of The Sound of Music.

Salzburg, the home of Mozart, is fairly small. For the most part Keelin and I split up to do out exploring. Highlights from the city include:

  • A 1853m trek via cable car to the top of Untersberg Mountain.

  • Festung Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe
View from the castle, that's Untersberg in the background
  •  Mozart's birthplace
  • Apple strudel
  • And last but not least, our Sound of Music Tour, which included the gazebo, the wedding church, and a trip to the hills.
